The human voice has a limited audio frequency range ; music may range from 10 to 30000 Hertz. I had hoped this tiny USB device could do yeoman's work connecting to self-powered external speakers. Nope ~ guess again, dude. I have requested an RMA from the Amazon Seller; they have obliged. Next, from reading reviews on the big A, I am going with the Griffin iMic USB adapter. Even an audio pro gives it very high marks.
I never tried this adapter for telephone applications; I bet it will work just fine for the price. In fact, my seller's ad copy only talks about this particular use.

I got this great device because my two year old Sony Vaio FS series notebook has an unfortunate defect: the headphone jack is very sensitive and easily damaged since it is placed on the front end of the pc. At first i bought a usb headphone but I found it quite uncomfortable, so when I found this adapter while surfing amazon I immediately decided to give it a try. I have to say i'm very happy with it. I can finally connect my favorite headphones and my hi-fi speakers to my pc, and the sound is spectacular (it actually gets much louder than what my computer's inbuilt sound card would allow). However there is one slight problem with it that can be annoying at times: the plastic casing of the adapter separates relatively easily after some time (happened the first time after about 2-3 weeks of use). It is easy to put back together and the function of the adapter is in no way hindered, but like i said, it can be annoying.
Overall still a great product for an amazing price. Highly recommended!
UPDATE (03/10/08): A few days ago it just stopped working, actually it can work, but you have to plug it in about a million times to get it to work, and if you move your computer it will stop working again. I guess for the price I paid ($4.00) that's expected, but now it $20. Anyway if you need a USB sound card just get a Griffin iMic, it costs a little more but it's definitely worth it.
